the 100,000th Liftshare memberThere are officially more than 100,000 people registered with the UK's nationwide car-sharing scheme at www.liftshare.com. www.Liftshare.com provides a free database where anyone can register a journey they are making and find out about other people who are travelling in the same direction. The figure, which was achieved today, confirms that formal carsharing through on-line schemes is growing in popularity across the country. In the last year alone membership has increased by 30,000 (43%).

The founder of www.Liftshare.com, Ali Clabburn explains the reasons behind such a dramatic rise:

"The growth in car sharing across the UK can largely be attributed to the increase of aware of carsharing as a transport alternative. The last 12 months has seen an increase in petrol prices, disruption to public transport, the introduction of plans to pilot High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes as well as a general increase in the awareness among both government and the public that we must all do more to reduce CO2 emissions."

"Carsharing can provide a real solution to the problems associated with car-use, without being in any way 'anti-car'. It is also a great way to compliment current public transport infrastructure so it is no wonder more people are giving it a go."

liftshare's members are saving an estimated twenty four million miles on the UK roads each year – reducing car emissions by 4,600 tonnes of CO2.

liftshare not only provide a free public service but they also work privately with councils, universities, hospitals and businesses around the UK helping to establish in house and county-wide car share schemes. It is by working so closely with other car share scheme operators around the UK that such a remarkable rise has been achieved so rapidly.

liftshare are continuously developing and are about to launch similar services to match up taxi sharers, cycle buddies and walking buddies.
