Car sharing takes off in Scotland
22/03/2005

If you live in Scotland , expect to see lots of news about car-sharing in the coming months.

liftshare.com, the UK 's largest car-sharing scheme, is developing its presence in Scotland with the introduction of several new websites for businesses and the general public.

Working in partnership with NESTRANS (the North East Scotland Transport Partnership) liftshare.com will soon be launching a branded car-sharing scheme for individuals and businesses in Aberdeen , Aberdeenshire and the rest of North East Scotland. The new web site can be seen at www.nestranscarshare.com and enables individuals to find people with whom to share their journeys and the cost of travel. In addition local businesses can sign up to the scheme enabling their staff to share their journeys to work.

Likewise liftshare.com is working with Dundee Council. www.dundeeLiftshare.com will be launched this spring, enabling businesses to set up car-sharing schemes for staff, whilst members of the public can search the database for free to find travel companions.

Some companies in Scotland are already promoting car-sharing schemes to their staff, including Scottish Courage and Robert Gordon University. Another example is computer company Agilent Technologies, which introduced a car-sharing scheme as part of their Travel Plan a couple of years ago and have already seen a reduction in car-travel from 71% to 65%. They estimate this is saving staff about £100 a month each and the company about £27,000 a year in car-parking maintenance.

Marcus Seaman, Project Manager for liftshare.com in Scotland , is looking forward to rolling out car-sharing to more companies inScotland:

“We already have thousands of members in Scotland , but we expect to see many more people enjoying the benefits of car-sharing as a consequence of working in partnership with the local authorities and businesses. It's just great – for us and for everyone in Scotland.”
