Have a gold star if you said that both diesel and petrol were under 79 pence per litre in March 2001!
Put another way, prices have increased by 74% in a decade. And it costs a staggering £30 more to fill your small family car than it did in 2001. Even just five years ago, the cost of filling up in 2006 was £21 less than it is now.
Fuel prices are beginning to take their toll on motorists, with the breakdown service provider Green Flag stating that the number of fuel "run-outs" increased by 40% in January. This is part of a trend that has seen the number of people who drive off without paying for their fuel reach six a month at each of Britain’s 9,000 filling stations.
Much of the most recent increase in prices has been attributed to soaring oil prices and the increase of VAT in January. A further increase in fuel duty increase is planned for April; there is mounting pressure on the Government to abandon this increase, but no formal announcement has been made.
