liftshare welcomes possible car-share lanes on the UKs motorways

liftshare.com - the UK 's largest car-sharing scheme - today welcomed the announcement that the government is considering the introduction of a new congestion-busting car-share lane on the M25, M61 and M62.

“We've been encouraging the government to look at how our roads could be used more efficiently and it looks like the message has finally got through. Car-sharing provides a simple way of reducing congestion and pollution and is free to organise through our system at liftshare.com. Dedicated car-sharing lanes are the most effective way of promoting car-sharing, and we encourage the introduction of more lanes across the UK ”.

Transport Secretary Alastair Darling has asked the Highways Agency to look at whether such lanes could be installed on the M25 (between junctions 12 – 15), the M61 (in the Manchester area) & the M62 (in the Leeds area) to encourage drivers to share cars, reduce congestion, and help the environment.

Mr. Darling said:

"I am determined to make the best possible use of the road network. Carpool lanes have an important role to play in making best use of road space, as well as helping the environment and reducing congestion. They work in the US and there is no reason they can't work here."

"The Highways Agency will undertake further consultation and detailed investigation and design work before any final decisions are made."
