Sky is the UK’s leading entertainment and communications company, whose primary products are Sky TV, Sky Broadband and Sky Talk. Sky employs over 16,500 people across the UK including approximately 7,000 at their site in West London.
Back in 2006, Sky produced and implemented a travel plan as part of a planning application. The aim of the travel plan was to achieve a significant shift away from single occupancy cars to more sustainable modes of travel. Though this was a challenge, it was also a huge opportunity to bring benefits to the business, contributing towards environmental targets and running a more efficient site.
Car-sharing, administered through liftshare, forms a part of the travel plan at Sky’s sites. It has been a contributor to the 18% reduction in single occupancy car use over 24 months at Sky’s Osterley site.
There is an ongoing programme of promotion and events, including roadshows, branded giveaways (including air fresheners, ice-scrapers and torches) poster campaigns, and participation in liftshare Week. Sky’s BUDi teams are offered prime, dedicated parking spaces and a guaranteed lift home. Sky is also proactive in rewarding its existing car-sharers, by offering free car washes and chocolates during liftshare week. Car-sharing is also very popular at Sky’s Scottish sites.
Sky’s achievements in travel planning have been recognised both in the UK and in the EU, having won the Pan-European Workplace Mobility Plan Award (2010), TfL’s Smarter Travel Workplace of the Year Award (2010) and the ACT Travelwise’s flagship award for the Commuter Friendly Workplace of the Year (2010)
