Five car-sharers save £100,000!
28/01/2013

No doubt you've heard the news about the threatened petrol price increase. It could cost an extra 4p per litre over the coming days.

But let's not indulge in too much doom and gloom. Here's an amazing story: five car-sharers saving themselves about £100,000 over the past 20 year. They’ve also experienced many of the less well-known benefits of sharing lifts, such as the welcome opportunity to take a nap as someone else drives you home!

There are currently over 365,000 members on the Liftshare network - which your scheme is part of - sharing or seeking to share. As one member, James, said: "I think I am saving just over £1,200 per year in petrol alone not to mention wear and tear on my car. We have all become good friends through car-sharing and regularly socialise outside of travelling to work."

The typical commuter who car-shares saves on average £987 a year. Now could be the ideal time to give it a try!

50% increase in number of invitations to car-share!
12/10/2012

Liftshare Week (1-5 October) had a record-breaking impact on the number of commuters asking others going their way to car-share with them.

Over 50% more 'request to share' messages were sent between members during the fortnight of Liftshare Week and its run-up compared to the same period during last year’s (previously record-breaking) campaign!

"More than one share request was being sent between members every minute of every working day throughout the fortnight – which was beyond even our expectations,” said Ali Clabburn, founder of the Liftshare network (which this site is a part of).

"The success of this campaign really underlines the shift in driving behaviour going on around the UK; the increase in people recognising how easy, fun and popular it is to share lifts – not to mention the typical commuter saving on average £987 a year!"

Notes:

• 5,590 people sent a 'request to share' message on the nationwide network during the fortnight of Liftshare Week 2012

• 3,697 share requests were sent during last year's campaign (which had previously been the best fortnight ever)

BT travel together and love it
01/10/2012

The Environmentalist recently ran an article about BT and their commitment to cutting their carbon footprint. So, how are they doing it? With the help of Liftshare!

‘In 2011, BT was faced with a considerable challenge: moving up to 900 staff from different locations into a new office with just 75 parking spaces’ says the Environmentalist. They also had signed up to legislation that pledged the reduction of single occupancy vehicles on site by 47% in 5 years. This was a big ask for the global company.

But Liftshare came to help, and with the aid of car-sharing BT has already seen noticeable CO2 and financial savings. A plan was devised that out of the 75 spaces they had available, 45 were allocated to staff who car-shared, 12 were reserved for disabled motorists and the rest were turned into dedicated visitor parking bays.

It was slow work at first, BT had to ease its employees to sharing with one other, then maybe two, and so on until each car was full of happy lift-sharers! From an initial problem of 85-90% single occupancy vehicles, BT had reduced this figure to just 65% by May 2012 (less than a year after the scheme’s first being implemented).

Thanks to Liftshare’s journey-matching tools, BT’s employees can register their details online and find colleagues who also drive along their route to work! This alleviated a good deal of problems for the telecoms company. With the help of promotion and hard work from the Liftshare team, BT are well on the way to meeting that 47% target by becoming even more efficient with environmental issues firmly on its agenda.

BT had a problem that needed solving, but lift-sharing doesn’t have to be forced, it should be top of the agenda for all of us. As Founder and Managing Director of Liftshare, Ali Clabburn says that ‘Organisations should consider introducing a car-sharing scheme even if they do not have a pressing parking problem. The investment in a corporate car-sharing scheme is minimal and is far outweighed by the potential benefits for both the environment and staff.’

And the figures speak for themselves: BT estimates that its employees, by car-sharing, will save 164 tonnes in CO2 emissions and £250,000 in fuel costs each year.

You can save on costs too, we want everybody to benefit from the joy of car-sharing, whether you’re an individual or a company. So register yourself today, and find your perfect journey-match!

If you're car-sharing already, remember you can always add a few more to your carpool.

Gemma (pictured) started by sharing with just one other person, but now she's found some other good journey-matches, and four of them are sharing their commute.

How much is she saving? A handsome £3,322.78 every year!

Next week (1-5 October) is Liftshare Week. This website is part of the UK’s original and largest car-sharing network. So if you want to share your journey (and save hundreds – even thousands - of pounds), here is where you'll find your best chance...

5 reasons to embrace Liftshare Week
25/09/2012

Liftshare Week (1-5 October) is all about encouraging individuals to give lift-sharing a try, to discover its financial, social and environmental benefits!

Last year, Liftshare Week won a European award, and over 6,200 new members signed up in just five days!

This year we have done even more to make the campaign more successful than ever and we’re asking you to get involved...

Here are 5 reasons why you should!

1. Cost

Split the cost of any journey in half or even more! When petrol prices are rising, sharing the financial burden can save you significant amounts of cash!

2. Environment

If everybody car-sharied just one day a week, congestion on the roads could be reduced by up to 20%! Not only would you not have to spend so much time in traffic, but you'll be significantly reducing your C02 emissions too!

3. Image

Doing your bit for the environment and sharing lifts with others can only improve your caring image!

4. Employment

If you are thinking about working somewhere, making your commute to the office, cheaper and easier makes more job opportunities attractive.

5. Sociality

Lift-sharing is also proven to create better social networks (an often hidden attribute of car sharing) talking with those you share with helps to create stronger social bonds.
