Thank you to everyone who took part in National liftshare Day 2006 and helped us to make it a success.
More people registered a car share journey during June 2006 than in any month previously and this is largely as a result of National liftshare Day. This is great news not just for the proliferation of car sharing nationally but also for our existing members who now have a greater chance of finding matches.
June has enabled to us to exceed the 120,000 member mark meaning that not only are there now more registered car sharers in the UK than ever before but that membership is growing at a faster rate. In the last 2 months alone we have recruited over 10,000 members. This reflects not only increased awareness but also, as the idea catches on, the viability of car sharing as travel option for the masses and not just the minority.
National liftshare Day 2006 was targeted at working towards increasing the number of car sharers in the UK by 20%. If the national average car occupancy can be raised from 1.6 to 2 people then the UK's CO2 emissions from cars would experience a 20% reduction, helping the UK to achieve the 2012 target set out in the Kyoto Protocol.
Our slogan was Make Car Occupancy 2 and reduce CO2."
Thank you to everyone who organised their own car share events up and down the country and for sending us feedback on what you achieved. Car sharing was promoted by national and local radio stations and dozens of news publications throughout the week 12th - 16th June and there can be no doubt that this year was a tremendous success for raising awareness and encouraging more people to give it a go.
Our aim is to raise the average car occupancy from 1.6 to 2 people. By doing so we could reduce CO2 emissions from cars by 20%. With over 120,000 registered car sharers around the UK we, with your help, are already achieving a phenomenal amount. That said there is still a lot of work to be done. National liftshare Day is an important event in terms of raising awareness of car sharing but it is the on going commitment by car sharers, such as yourselves, which will have the real long term impact on our environment.
