Car sharing has potential to save UK 9.9 million tonnes of CO2.

Dr. Keith Tovey, Energy Science Director for CRed and Reader of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia has calculated that if the average car occupancy could be increased from where it currently stands at 1.7 occupants per car to 2 people per car then the UK could save over 9.9 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
With the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change being published today liftshare Ltd, who operate the UK's largest network of car sharers, hope that the government will give more attention to alternative transport measures, such as car sharing. Over 137,000 people have already signed up to car share via www.liftshare.com but liftshare's overall aim is to raise the average car occupancy by raising awareness of the benefits of car sharing.
liftshare's founder Ali Clabburn said: "raising awareness of the benefits of car sharing has to be one of the most cost effective ways in which the government can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. It requires no major infrastructure changes, no technological development, all it needs is a commitment to change travel behavior."
The free website www.Liftshare.com can be used by anyone making any type of journey. Users simply need to fill in details of a journey they want to make and the system will match them together with others traveling in the same direction. Car sharing not only enables individuals to do their bit for the environment but also means they can save money by splitting their petrol costs.
