Members of Liftshare are now sharing an estimated 100 million miles of road travel each year.
New statistics - being launched by the UK's car-sharing network this weekend - include this landmark figure, which was calculated based on the current level of sharing of its members and the journeys registered on its system.
One member, Norman, who calculates that he is sharing 18,000 miles a year, said: "Car-sharing really opens your eyes to the thousands of cars trundling up and down Britain's roads with just one occupant. Day after day, they take up the same fifty feet of highway, probably tailing the same car as the day before. It's madness. By car-sharing, we could easily halve the amount of traffic on our nation's rush-hour roads."
"This is a phenomenal figure," added Liftshare's founder, Ali Clabburn. "A hundred million is almost too large a number to comprehend, and yet that is how many car-miles Liftshare's members are sharing every year. The financial and environmental implications for this are also self-evident. In total our members have registered a billion miles which they wish to share."
Liftshare's new statistics go live on Sunday 1 March and can be found at www.Liftshare.com/business/livestats.asp
