DfT urged to do more for car-sharing

A paper by the Government's advisory body, the Sustainable Development Commission, has called on the Department for Transport (DfT) to publicise more information on car-sharing.

The recent report, 'Smarter Moves - How information communications technology can promote sustainable mobility', has labelled car-sharing as one of the applications that "appear to have the most significant potential for improving overall sustainability [in transport]".

With public spending looking at cut-backs over the coming year, the report has urged the DfT to set specific policies in its quest to cut carbon emissions from transport and contribute to the Government's target of a 34% reduction by 2020.

By highlighting that "one of the easiest ways of improving vehicle efficiency measured on a per passenger kilometre basis is to increase the number of passengers in each vehicle", it is clear that research is beginning to show the great benefits car-sharing schemes provide, at the low costs required.

Recommendations include:
• "The Department for Transport to fully integrate car-sharing options into the TransportDirect journey planner and further promote car-sharing through the Act on CO2 campaign;
• The Department for Transport to develop and publish metrics such that numbers of people car-sharing and an estimate of the resulting reduction in vehicle mileage can be published in future editions of Transport Statistics Great Britain.
