Stranded travellers turn to car-sharing to get home
19/04/2010

Hundreds of people have turned to car-sharing to get home after their flights were cancelled due to Iceland's volcanic eruption.

The Liftshare network, which is usually only used for journeys round the UK, has seen people offering and seeking lifts from as far afield as Kiev, Helsinki, Latvia and Bulgaria.

The free Liftshare sites are also being used by people wanting to get around within Europe, with journeys available for sharing including Cadiz in southern Portugal to Rzeszow in Poland.

"These last few days have seen a bit of a resurgence of the Blitz mentality, with people offering their spare car seats to other stranded travellers," said founder Ali Clabburn. "It's been fantastic for us to see how many people are using our various car-sharing sites.

"People are wanting to car-share home as it's one of the most affordable options, as well as being quick, direct and providing company through foreign countries which could be quite intimidating to drive through alone."
