The One Billion Challenge
22/09/2010

Greener Journeys this week launched its One Billion Challenge: a national campaign to take a billion car journeys off the road in three years, saving two million tonnes of CO2.

The scheme, being run by the UK's major bus companies, asks drivers to change one out of every 25 journeys from a car to a bus or coach trip.

The campaign is being boosted by a large ticket give-away with the slogan "Join the million fares club"; 100,000 winners will receive ten free single-fare bus tickets to use on bus services from participating operators.

"I wholeheartedly support this campaign, and I also know the sincerity of Greener Journeys' commitment to reducing the environmental impact of car miles, since one of the organisations behind it - First Group - already has a Liftshare scheme," said founder Ali Clabburn.

"However, it is also worth pointing out that - for those who don't have access to a convenient bus service - car-sharing can also have a huge impact on the number of cars on the roads. In fact, if each driver shared just one extra trip every fortnight, the UK would still see over a billion fewer car journeys!"
