Preparations for National liftshare Day 2004 are underway

National liftshare Day will be taking place as usual this year on Monday 14 th June as part of Green Transport Week.
The aim of the day is to promote car-sharing as a cost effective and environmentally friendly form of transport, which is available to everyone in the UK free of charge.
Following the success of last year's efforts, the day will again be used to raise funds for Asthma UK , to assist research into the links between vehicle pollution and asthma.
Pollution is the biggest concern for people with asthma in the UK . 81 per cent of people with asthma say that pollution causes asthma symptoms, whilst evidence from America proves that car fumes cause asthma.
By encouraging people to share cars, the organisers of National liftshare Day hope to reduce the number of cars on our roads and so reduce pollution. In doing so they aim to improve air quality and also raise valuable funds for Asthma UK . Car-sharing can be organised on-line or over the phone with the assistance of liftshare.com, the UK 's largest car-sharing company. To join the scheme simply register your details at www. liftshare.com and enter your journey details. Drivers can search for people to give lifts to, whilst passengers can search for lifts to any destination in the UK .
The benefits of car-sharing are considerable. By splitting the costs of travel, both drivers and passengers can save money, whilst also reducing congestion and pollution on our roads. And car-sharers can choose to donate the money that they save through car-sharing to Asthma UK , using an on-line donations service.
Established in 1997, liftshare now has over 50,000 members and 4 million journeys registered on their database. As well as the national scheme, liftshare also provides car-sharing schemes to over 300 businesses and communities across the country. Current clients include IKEA, Transport for London , Airbus and a large number of Councils, many of whom will be actively promoting car-sharing and Asthma UK as part of National liftshare Day.
Ali Clabburn, founder of liftshare, says it's going to be a busy day:
“We've planning to build on the success of last years event, and hope to get even more coverage of car-sharing in the UK . More and more people are turning to car-sharing as a sustainable form of transport so we want to shout about the benefits of car-sharing and how easy it is to get involved.”
Asthma UK is also promoting National liftshare Day.
