School-run.org will enable parents to search a secure database for free and find other parents with whom to share the school run.
The aim of the scheme is to provide parents and pupils with alternative transport options, and so reduce the number of cars travelling to and from schools at peak hours during the school term.
It doesn't matter whether parents prefer their children to walk, cycle or be driven to school – the scheme covers all forms of transport and enables parents to find an accompanied form of transport to suit their needs.
Schools will need to pay a small licence free to register with the scheme, which could form the keystone of their School Travel Plan. Alternatively local authorities can buy school-run schemes for all the schools in their area at a reduced rate.
The scheme has been designed so that schools will be able to choose the level of security of their school-run scheme – ranging from full CRB checks for all parents to a password restricted scheme which only gives access to parents of the registered school.
Imogen Martineau, the Project Manager of the scheme, believes that the new website could change the way that school travel is organised in the future:
“School-run.org will change the way that people think about the school run. The site provides a practical solution to a variety of problems that we all recognise, including congestion, pollution and the rising incidence of childhood obesity.
“School-run.org will assist parents and children identify healthy and sustainable options for accompanied travel – resulting in benefits for children, parents and the wider community.”
