And there's one simple act that we can all do, free of charge, which will also help us to save money:
Car-sharing not only reduces emissions of carbon dioxide - it is also an effective way of saving money and reducing congestion.
At present, transport is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the UK , contributing over 19% of all greenhouse gases. Of this, 94% comes from road transport which highlights the extent to which our individual journeys contribute to global warming.
By simply sharing a car individuals can significantly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases they emit, whilst continuing to enjoy all the benefits of private vehicles.
liftshare.com, the UK 's largest car-sharing scheme, now has more than 66,000 members and estimate that they are currently saving about 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum through their free-to-use service at www.liftshare.com .
Ali Clabburn, founder of liftshare.com, explains how easy the system is to use:
“You simply register your details, say where you're going and when and we'll find you a match with whom you can share the journey. With more than 10 million empty seats on our roads every day, it makes sense to find ways of matching people up.”
He goes on to highlight the benefits of car-sharing:
“Not only are you doing your bit to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, you can also save money and meet like-minded people. It's a win-win situation for everyone.”
