Liftshare.com, the UK’s largest car-sharing scheme, has seen unprecedented numbers of new members sign up in the last few months. In the last three months alone, more than 12,000 people have registered with the scheme, a 100% increase on the previous three months.
“Our membership levels increase month on month anyway, but with the growing cost of fuel we’ve seen a marked increase in the number of people looking for alternative ways of reducing the cost of driving”, says Ali Clabburn, founder and Managing Director of Liftshare.com
Liftshare.com provides a free on-line matching service where anyone can register their details and find other people with whom to share their journey. The scheme is nation wide, and currently saves the same number of car-miles as 200 trips to the moon.
The company recommends that passengers reimburse their drivers at 10p per mile – thereby enabling car drivers to reduce their travel costs significantly.
“Car-sharing is one of the best ways to reduce both travel costs and congestion. Many of our members use the scheme for the daily commute and they typically save £1000 a year on fuel costs. It’s a win-win situation for everyone”, concludes Ali.
