Car share with confidence

New to Liftshare? We understand it might feel a bit intimidating to share a car if you haven't tried it before, but there's every reason to give it a go.

The Liftshare team constantly monitor content added to the site and are easily reachable if you have any immediate concerns or want to talk to us.

Staying Safe

We’ve designed Liftshare to be as safe as possible. Our service has helped over a million people share a lift, and played our part in forming many new friendships. But it still pays to follow some common sense tips when you organise a lift.

1.
Avoid providing your full name or address before you have met someone. Liftshare will not share these details on your behalf.
2.
Make good use of the secure messaging on Liftshare before your lift, and only agree to a lift if you’re happy.
3.
Some members choose to show each other their IDs - e.g. passports, student cards or driving licences - so they know they're travelling with the right person.
4.
You are never under any obligation to share a lift. If you don’t feel comfortable, don’t go through with the lift – even if it’s been agreed.
5.
As with any activity that involves meeting new people, it’s advisable to meet in a public place the first time. It’s a good idea to let friends and family know your plans.

You can check someone's driving licence information here or share your driving licence information with someone else here.

Car Concerns

How to check whether a car is allowed on the road

If you’re taking a lift, you may want to check the details of the driver’s car. Ask to see the driver’s insurance documentation before you share. You can also ask your driver for the number plate and make, and then check its MOT and tax status on the Government’s website here:

Liftshare doesn’t affect your car insurance

Liftshare suggested contributions do not allow drivers to generate profit from giving a lift. If you’re not generating a profit from the trip, and are not giving a lift to more than eight people at once, the Association of British Insurers states that normal car insurance policies are unaffected by car sharing. Since the fees you earn from passengers are based on Government-approved fuel contributions, you don’t need to worry.

Your personal details are safe

Only your first name and biography are visible to other users when you offer or request a lift. Your location information is filtered, this means we only show the first part of your postcode and the street name. If you have provided your house number on the system, this will NOT show to other members.

Sharing phone numbers

Your mobile number is only shared with your driver or passenger once your booking is confirmed. This is so you can organise the details of your lift.

Our members

Profile pictures and ratings

Profile pictures are not compulsory, but they do increase your chance of finding a Liftshare match by 27%!

To help people find reliable drivers and passengers, members are encouraged to leave ratings for each other after messaging. This helps others decide whether they wish to message that person, based on the feedback of other members.
